SUMMARY:Pop-Up Museum at the MAH
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_3858" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Pop Up Museum"][/caption] Join us at MAH’s Pop-Up Museum this Saturday\, March 24th from 3-5PM. Created by University of Washington graduate student Michelle DelCarlo\, the pop-up museum is a participatory community event where you share a personal object\, based on a theme\, to spark conversation with others. The theme of this pop-up is Something or Someone You Love. Do you have a meaningful photo or object of someone very special? Perhaps you love the outdoors and have a well-loved pair of hiking shoes. Or maybe you are in love with a place in the world and have a memento from a trip there. Feel free to interpret the theme as you will. Once you arrive at the pop-up up\, you will write a brief label for your object describing why it is meaningful to you. Be prepared to share stories\, learn about others\, and have fun. At the end of the pop-up\, you will take your object home so you can continue to cherish it. See you there!

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Shirley Lehner-Rhoades
DESCRIPTION:Chalk Painting On Display from Saturday November 19 -Thursday December 4th (including Free First Friday) Shirley Lehner- Rhoades\, the local artist responsible for bringing a 500-yr old Raphael to life at the MAH in July\, will be returning to create a new winter themed street painting. Come to the MAH on November 19th from 11am to 5pm to watch this new image magically appear before your eyes. The chalk mural will be up for two weeks until Free First Friday in December. Be sure to come and visit before this ephemeral masterpiece disappears. About Shirley Lehner-Rhoades: Shirley Lehner-Rhoades is an artist\, instructor and owner of an art school (Scotts Valley Art Center) in Scotts Valley\, CA. She has been teaching fine art (drawing\, painting and crafting) in private and group classes since 1999. She has brought the joy and delight of artistic creation to hundreds of youth and adult students. Many of her students have been the recipients of awards in various shows and competitions throughout Santa Cruz County. Shirley has been a local artist and member of several San Francisco Bay area art galleries since 1985. In addition to her formal art education at San Francisco Academy of Art\, San Jose State and Arizona State\, she has studied under William Downey Dyer. Her favorite media are watercolor\, oil and pastel. Her subject matter includes portrait\, plein air landscape\, seascape\, still life and figurative painting. During the summer\, Shirley participates in art festivals as a Street Painter. SUMMARY:Toy Trains at the MAH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a rotating cavalcade of operating toy trains from the 1920s to the 21st century. Watch a massive standard gauge steam engine from the 1920s start up-headlight flashing\, drive wheels spinning\, smoke flowing from the smoke stack and of course a mighty whistle. On another track\, see a remote controlled modern production of an O gauge diesel with all the latest electronic features. Hear the roar as the diesel starts up\, the blast of the mighty horn\, the squeal of the brakes at the train slows for a curve and the chatter between the engineer and the control tower. Toy trains have come a long way over the last century\, but new or old\, the emphasis is on fun! The exhibit is open Thursday\, December 22\, 2011 - Friday\, January 6\, 2012 from 11am-5pm. We are closed Mondays\, Christmas Day and New Years Day.

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: "Forage Species" with Edward Martinez
DESCRIPTION: This piece will be on display from Sunday November 13 - early December “Forage Species” Edward Martinez Materials: Scrap metal fence\, scavenged sheet metal and elbow grease “and the meek shall inherit the earth”. ‘Often quoted and seldom taken seriously’. “Forage species” are those critters upon which all larger species depend upon for food. Typically these larger species are the ones we humans depend upon for food. We are learning to take great care of these stocks but are missing the message that the humble sardine\, anchovy\, jack smelt and others are trying to tell us. These species are changing their behavior and patters dramatically which should be seen as a sign that the system that delivers our salmon\, halibut and Sea Bass is under stress. “Forage species “ attempts to put into perspective visually\, our relationship to these tiny angels. It also begs the viewer to ask questions about changing climate\, toxic industry\, and human disruption of viable ecosystem. Especially when they see Bees disappearing in mass numbers\, where they see radical changes to the numbers and migratory patterns of these crucial indicator species. If you are interested in "Forage Species" please contact the artist at elm3@got.net or call 419-5855 About Ed Martinez: Edward Martinez is an artist\, entrepreneur\, developer\, designer and marketing strategist with more than 36 years of environmentally innovative\, marketing and non-profit experience; In 2009\, one of Ed’s video productions for the California Grey Bears was a finalist for a national Community Television award. SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Gayle Pitts
DESCRIPTION:Saturday December 17\, 11am-5pm Gayle Pitts\, Sculptor (Gayle Force Creations) Gayle Pitts is a multi-media sculptor and ocean conservationist who lives and works in the Santa Cruz Tannery. Come to the MAH Atrium to watch this passionate and multi-faceted artist combine canvas and natural found materials to create sculptures that evoke the wild spirit and beauty of the California Coastline. About Gayle Pitts: [caption id="attachment_2528" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Gayle Pitts and her husband Art"][/caption] Gayle is a native Californian born in Santa Cruz. Her childhood and early adulthood were spent on the ocean first with her family who fished from the Channel Islands to Fort Bragg and then on commercial fishing boats that ranged as far north as Eureka\, California. Marine life is the primary subject of Gayle's work. Much of her free time as a child was spent rowing in a dinghy with her German Shepherd Kimo into the coves and inland waterways of the California coast studying the infinite variety of sea life that surrounded her. Gayle sculpts on canvas\, driftwood\, stone and seashells using a product called Paper Clay. Unlike red clay\, paper clay is not fired. When wet it is sculpted like any clay\, but when dry it can be carved\, sanded\, layered or re-softened if needed. It can be painted and sealed using acrylic paints. Protection and preservation of sea life and the ocean is a primary focus of Gayle's. The loss of the fish populations and its effect on the lives of the fisherman is of major concern. Gayle plans to donate a percentage of her profits to organizations that protect the marine environment. If you are interested in contacting Gayle to view her art she can be reached at 831-332-7813.

SUMMARY:Everything Which Is... Yes Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Come to the MAH for a free screening of Everything Which Is... Yes\, the 60-minute documentary that won the Audience Award for Locally-Produced Work at the 2011 Santa Cruz Film Festival. John Barret's moving film chronicles local documentarian David Hoffman's recovery from a devastating fire that destroyed his home\, his personal film archive and the treasured collections he had built over 45 years. Determined to "make something good out of something bad"\, Hoffman began to videotape himself as a record for his young sons of what the loss meant to him. He takes us on a tour of his burned property and the result is an inspiring glimpse into his life and times\, his distinct way of seeing the world and his remarkable career as a pioneer of documentary filmmaking\, featuring stunning clips from many of his unique and important films. Most importantly\, Hoffman's stated philosophy leaves us with an uplifting sense of perseverance and a strong testament to the notion that we all have the capacity to make something good out of something bad. The film will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and the subject of the film. View the trailer here. This screening is a precursor to a Tannery Arts Lecture Series event on Thursday\, November 17 at 7pm on the future of independent film in Santa Cruz.

SUMMARY:Jackie Baxton & Lael Seltzer
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_492" align="alignright" width="240" caption="Jackie Baxton"][/caption] Mixed Media Sculptures and Mask Making; July 23. Jackie and Lael are students at the California College of the Arts whose work explores the connection between dreams\, nature\, and the mechanical world. About Jackie Baxton: "I create art as a therapeutic means of reflecting my life experiences\, spiritual mythologies\, and the natural world from which I draw visual inspiration. Working with a variety of media and techniques including gourds\, painting\, metal\, wet and hand felting\, found objects and clay\, I sculpt and build scenarios or worlds to encase visions inspired by nature. Currently a student at the California College of the Arts\, I now reside in Oakland with my pack. My experiences traveling offer major sources of content and inspiration to my artwork. This summer’s expedition around the Southwest has influenced many ideas and lent concepts to a body of work now in progress." [caption id="attachment_493" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Lael Seltzer"][/caption] About Lael Seltzer: "I create to express my opinions\, dreams\, and perspective on life as an individual human cast into a beautiful but treacherous universe. The dichotomy between the natural and mechanical worlds is a valley of concept I often explore. I use a range of media and practices to employ my visions and abstractions\, including woodblock-printing\, painting\, pen and ink\, use of found objects\, etching\, mask-making\, and sculpting. Finished pieces may vary from social commentaries\, to comic satire\, to representations of natural forms\, but I am constantly exploring new techniques\, and landscapes both physical and conceptual. I currently reside in Oakland with my companion and furry friends\, where I am a senior at the California College of the Arts."

SUMMARY:Free First Friday October
DESCRIPTION: Friday\, October 7 11am – 9pm. Free admission and extended hours. From 5-9pm\, enjoy a no-host bar and live music while enjoying art and mingling with friends. cost: free. Screening of Papillons de Nuit 7pm Papillons de Nuit—Butterflies of the Night—is a video of the night visitors photographed every evening on the artist’s lighted window. Attracted to the light\, the moth has entered mythology and inspired poetry as a symbol of devotion and sacrifice in many cultures. Paradoxically\, our common wisdom dismisses the moth as unpleasant\, and it is often extinguished with the glancing blow of the hand. Using macro photography and video\, with the simplicity of early films\, artist Diana Hobson presents the exquisite detail and beauty of the common moth—every one an individual in its intricacy and diversity.

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Another Door
DESCRIPTION:Friday September 30 – Sunday October 2\, 11am-5pm Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall: Another Door Another Door is a large-scale\, interactive sculpture made primarily out of used doors\, recycled bike wheels\, and walls. The work consists of a series of small\, modular rooms and spaces that the viewer is able to navigate and experience through the use of the doors. Each door is connected to another using a simple mechanical overhead pulley system\, so that when one door opens another door closes. Each door represents a choice\, and each room a decision. The rooms have been painted by a number of different local artists\, inspiring participants to explore and move through the structure to experience all the unique spaces. Truly a collaborative work\, Another Door is the first sculpture produced by the Desperados Art Collective and was made possible by the support of Santa Cruz City\, the Black Rock Arts Foundation\, and the community both locally and online. Though fabricated as and Honorarium piece for Burning Man 2011\, Another Door stands alone on or off the desert as a strong work rooted in concept and rendered with ingenuity and skill. About Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall: Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall met years back as sculpture students at UC Santa Cruz. In school they often found themselves working together and collaborating\, so upon graduating it was only natural for these two to form the successful and productive ‘Desperados Art Cooperative’. Paul has lived in over eight countries since his childhood\, his diverse upbringing providing him with a strong multifaceted personality. Over the years he has a developed a great love for material as well as “the mechanical.” A passionate cyclist and a skilled metalworker\, Paul’s eye for detail is apparent in all of his work. Calen was raised in the redwood foothills of Santa Cruz\, growing up in a large family of boys\, he has developed a great ability to both lead and collaborate. His work is often described as “playfully provocative” and his sophisticated concepts fuse seamlessly with his use of lighthearted materials. Though the Desperados are “young” (this is the first major sculpture that they’ve produced) their work ethic and intellect is quite matured. In the 7 months that they worked on “Another Door” Desperados grew from four members to eleven. The collective has allowed the new members an in depth introduction to the process and “paperwork” behind large-scale interactive art as well as the physical skills needed to fabricate it. Paul and Calen both share an innate ability to successfully teach and share their skills with others. Outside of Desperados\, Paul works as a mechanic at the Bike Church\, helping others learn the mechanics of their bikes\, while Calen works in town teaching art to adults with developmental disabilities.
