Put the pedal to the metal at the MAH for a three-day event showcasing an array of different techniques, methods and forms working with the medium of metal. We are excited to share a wide range of metal working methods including blacksmithing, junk metal art, jewelry crafting, wire art, and welding through a variety of workshops and demonstrations. Explore the art of metal throughout this weekend-long event. Be sure to check out the hot rods, motorcycles, and art bikes too!
Saturday and Sunday will feature all day demonstrations in an assortment of metal craft techniques, as well as opportunities for artist-led workshops with the chance to take home your own metal handiwork. Each day will showcase different artists and techniques. In the Atrium, visitors will have the opportunity to add to our giant collaborative metallic robot creation.
Enjoy a one-week only metal art exhibition in the atrium that will showcase work by all the metal artists involved in the event. Come to the MAH this weekend to link, twist, weld and fuse together a metallically monumental experience!
Interested in a more hands on experience with metal? Sign up NOW at the event or call us for an artist-led workshop. Here you will have the chance to put your metal experience into practice and create something yourself. Visitors are encouraged to sign up for all workshops in advance, to ensure their place. Note that there are different registration fees for each workshop in addition to the cost for general admission.
Joshua Muir: Art Bikes
Josh Muir will be demonstrating basic brazing proceedure for bicycle frame construction as well as simple techniques for working metal by hand. I will bring pre-cut parts to assemble a small run of bicycle stems.
Alan Ziegler and Celise Clevenger: Plasma Cutter
Plasma cutting uses a very thin and hot jet of compressed air, melting the material and blowing it away. The CNC (Computer Numerical Control) is what moves the cutting torch. We generate a drawing that is transferred to the cutter which runs the file. We cut flat sheets up to 48 X 96” and up to 1” thick.
Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild & Cabrillo Seahawks Metal Arts Club: Crazy Metal Quilt Participatory Demo
Join in on hammering, texturing, and coloring metal pieces of recycled metal. Each visitor’s personalized small copper and aluminum piece will be tied together to form a collaborative metallic quilt by the end of Experience Metal.
Dawn Nakanishi: Fold Forming
Dawn, head of the metal art department at Cabrillo College will demonstrate fold forging metal into various shapes and designs.

Ed Martinez: Create Scavenged Art

Wendy Ballen: 3D Wire Ornament

Learn how to make a wire ornament using different combinations of metal wire, copper, brass, anodized and galvanized steel. Nora Dougherty: Cuttlefish Casting
Sunday August 19th. 12pm-3pm. Location: North Court. $45. 10 years old and up. 12 students maximum.
Nora Dougherty will show you one of the earliest forms of metal casting with cuttlefish bones. This technique is immediate, low cost, uses simple tools and produces metal objects that have a beautiful, rich and aquatic texture. Beginners are welcome. All materials will be provided for each person to make at least one piece out of copper. Students are encouraged to bring their own tools and metal. This process does produce a a slight burning smell- we will be set up outside, which will be a great help in mitigating this- but people who are sensitive to smells- consider yourselves warned! Jeff Caplan: Make a Face: Calder’s Wire Cartoon Workshop
Sunday August 19th 2:30-3:30PM. Location: Auditorium. $25. All ages welcome. 14 students maximum.
Adults and Children of all ages will enjoy this playshop of wire tricks that you can use for the rest of your life. A spool of wire will become your everyday face, your eyes in disguise or your smile as superhero. Hang your creation on the museum wall during the day and take it home later. Optional artist photos will invite others to puzzle “Can you match the sculpture to the Face that made it?” Class size limited to 14 people. Your Personal Portrait Earrings and Feats of Desktop Daring in Whimsical Wire. Beginning and advanced artists will solve the puzzle of sculpting an expressive face in one continuous strand of color. Draw in crimson copper or brilliant brass. Following your passion, you may choose to make a dazzling pair of personalized earrings. You may create a personal icon of active inspiration for your desk, dinner table or dashboard: marathon running, ballet dancing or your highest self, flying free. Class size limited to 12 people. Michael Wood: Metal Foil Embossing
Sunday August 19th. 2 classes: 1-2:30 and 3-4:30PM. Location: North Court. $45. Ages 6 and up. 14 student maximum.
Metal Foil Embossing is a form of sheet metal embossing that uses a series of hand tools to work the metal into a relief form. We will be exploring the different techniques necessary to achieve that relief, and each participant will create their own piece utilizing those techniques. Copper and aluminum are the metals we will be working. We will also address a number of finishes that can be applied to those particular metals.
