Meet the Artist
R.R. Jones and Mattie Leeds: Wild Outside Worlding Art
Exhibition of photography and history bluring the line between potrarit and history.
Exhibited from July 29, 2006-November 26, 2006
The works in this exhibition,R.R. Jones and Mattie Leeds: Wild Outside Worlding Art Portraits of the gLocal, are visual manifestations of wild, unbridled creativity and exterior extensions of the artists’ souls, and they serve as a diagrammatical inference that the world the artists inhabit is an active, changing orb. This exhibition of photography and ceramics by Santa Cruz artists R.R. Jones and Mattie Leeds blurs the boundaries between portrait and history, between the global and the local and between the universal and the specific.
Thought provoking and aesthetically exciting, this exhibition clicks and slips the viewer into a chatroom of stimulating dialogue. Sharing a rich visual language of contradictions, Jones and Leeds offer a way into the lives of people we will probably never meet face to face. Jones’ introduction is filtered through the lens of his high quality, high-tech Hasselblad camera. Leeds guides us through our Santa Cruz past and present via his narrative-based ceramic vessels.
Born in Huston, and living in Santa Cruz since 1986, Jones' is a photographer with a wide portfolio. He has works in permanent collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Denver Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Special Collections, University of Santa Cruz, among others. In 2001 he was the recipient of a Gail Rich Award. His portraits are influenced by meeting people. As each person is revealed in a unique way Jones can "offer a glimpse into the life of another through the visual language that marks each individual's face."
