Notes from Santa Cruz – The County’s Musical History and Compositions: Contemporary Artists
This exhibit will show what has kept Santa Cruzans humming, dancing, singing, and clapping their hands over the past 150 years.
Exhibited from April 25 2009-August 9 2009
Guest curated by Frank Perry. Through historic photographs, sheet music, records, instruments, and other musical memorabilia this exhibit will show what has kept Santa Cruzans humming, dancing, singing, and clapping their hands over the past 150 years. One of the displays will follow recorded music from music boxes and wax cylinders to CDs and MP3s. Others will recall memorable concerts, musicians, and music teachers. And, of course, there will be musical samples from down through the years. Was “When It’s Apple Picking Time in Watsonville” (1913) a toe tapper or a dud? You be the judge.
Notes from Santa Cruz will be in one half of the Solari Gallery. The other half will exhibit Compositions: Contemporary Artists, curated by Marla Novo, showcases Robbie Schoen, Pete Saporito, Chris Tedesco, Carlos Dye and Chadwick Gibson. This exhibition highlights their art that uses musical objects or are inspired by music to create their work.
