Tapete Ceremony

We are honored to bring a new element to our annual Día de los Muertos celebration. Our partner, Senderos, has invited Oaxacan artist Sergio Vicente Garcia Aguilar to create a Tapete at the MAH.

A Tapete is a sculpture or tapestry made of sand or other elements that is essential to this celebration across some regions of Mexico. Join us as a community at the MAH as we hold space for this ceremony welcoming and celebrating those no longer with us.

Tapetes are an integral part of Día de los Muertos. They may showcase religious themes or death in a playful manner, like a skull. They can be made of sand, sawdust, flower petals, beans, rice, and even corn. Tapete designs vary but can be found in the streets of Mexico or inside homes in front of an altar.
