Celebrating 50 years of Pride in Santa Cruz is monumental.

To capture the significance of this occasion, we invite you to create a beaded disco ball that captures the essence of your experiences and accomplishments through color and texture.

Stop by the MAH and connect with others while you exchange Pride stories. The museum will be open till 6 pm and we invite you to visit the Queer Santa Cruz and the Threads of Love: The AIDS Memorial Quilt exhibits on the second floor.Explore all the Pride festivities this year by visiting the Santa Cruz Pride page.

What are Disco Balls?

  • In the 1920s, these glitter balls were used in nightclubs and hung above dancers to create a shiny atmosphere. This spherical object soon became a staple on every dance floor in the 1960s. With the popularity of discothèques in the 80s, the name “disco ball” represented this new popular culture.
  • It's important to acknowledge that Disco culture emerged from the nightlife in New York City in the late 1960s, created by Black (including Afro-Latinxs) and LGBTQ people.
