As the MAH welcomes its annual celebration of Día de los Muertos, we seek to expand our programming and invite community partners to collaborate and create diverse programming. This October, we are thrilled to have Joseph Jason Santiago LaCour from Writers of Color of Santa Cruz County.
Joseph will lead this bilingual workshop and focus on exchanging tips and good practices for performing poems and intentional public speaking. Often, Poets do not get ample time to familiarize themselves with the fine art of reading their work aloud. This workshop will help establish realistic goals for performance.
Oraciones, or Prayers, Poems Are Written to Be Spoken will give participants the space to perform their pieces and receive feedback from Joseph. He will ask specific questions about the details of breathing, posture, eye contact, and more. Together, the group will discuss the experiences and challenges of public speaking and provide unique solutions. Time permitting, a brief writing session will follow. This session is based on three core concepts: Breathe, Center, and Align. Then, participants will practice performing their poems, be observed in a safe space, and receive honest feedback.
All writing levels are welcome. Better practice will make you better. Practice.
