Production Manager

Hours: Flexible; 4 weeks (8/26-9/22/02)

Rate: Temporary; Contract ($5k-6k Range)

General Purpose of Position:

Working in consultation with the Director of Exhibitions & Programs and other staff, this position oversees the installation, operation, maintenance, disassembly, and packing of all light and sound-based artworks included in the 4-night Frequency festival (Sep 16-19, 2021) produced by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH).

This contract position is estimated at 20-30 hours per week in August and early September (which can be scheduled in a flexible manner), with extended hours leading into and during the festival dates of September 16-19, 2021. It is an expectation of all applicants that they are available for full-time/festival hours, including evenings and weekends.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

This position manages all production, staging, and related activities associated with the technical and operational needs for festival installations and performances, and serves as the main on-site production representative for artists and staff.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Oversee all aspects of festival production, including: advance logistics, day of schedules, onsite activations, as well as all audio and video recording and archiving
  • Coordinate lighting, sound, staging, electrical infrastructure, communication systems and other equipment required for installations and/or performances
  • Ensure all production and operational activities are coordinated and completed in accordance with planning deadlines and production schedules.
  • Oversee and manage the safe and compliant on-site installation, operational activity, and removal of site infrastructure and creative overlay in accordance with the site plan, load-in/out schedule, and administrative parameters.
  • Coordinate and manage event staff, contractor, supplier, and vendor activity according to schedule and site safety arrangements.
  • Develop production schedules for all festival staff and artists, detailing deadlines and other logistical support as required
  • Operate technical equipment during festival, as needed
  • Coordinate all shipping, crating, and packaging of incoming and outgoing artwork.
  • Coordinate with MAH staff on situations where weather etc. may impact performance schedule (postpone, cancellation, etc.)
  • Other duties as required


  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and 5+ years of professional experience
  • Ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform repairs to audio, video, and lighting equipment
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Willingness to work early mornings, late nights and weekends
  • Ability to move, lift, and perform very physical actions and ask for assistance when needed to perform those duties
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures
