Where Art Meets Storytelling: A Summer Camp for Kids 7-13 Led by a Muralist at the MAH

This summer, the MAH transforms into something even more vibrant than usual: a creative laboratory where imagination, history, and color collide. At the center of it all is a summer camp led from June 8th to the 12th by Jessica Carmen, a professional muralist, inviting young artists to explore the power of large-scale art and the stories it can tell.

From the moment campers walk through the museum doors, they will be immersed in an environment where creativity feels limitless. Surrounded by historic artifacts, fine art, and cultural narratives, participants will quickly learn that art is more than decoration—it’s a way to document experiences, honor communities, and spark conversations across generations.

Jessica has not only technical expertise but a deep passion for storytelling through art. Each day will begin with discussions inside the museum galleries, where campers will examine how artists throughout history have incorporated imagery, symbolism, and scale to communicate ideas. These conversations help campers see murals not just as paintings on walls, but as visual histories rooted in place and purpose.

Hands-on learning is at the heart of the camp experience. Campers will experiment with sketching, color theory, composition, and collaborative design. They will learned how to translate small ideas into large-format artwork—an exciting challenge that requires teamwork, problem-solving, and trust. Working side by side, campers will discover how individual styles can come together to form a cohesive, powerful piece.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the camp is its emphasis on community. Campers will be encouraged to reflect on their own stories, their surroundings, and what mattered most to them. These reflections will become the foundation of the mural’s design, resulting in artwork that feels personal, thoughtful, and deeply connected to the museum’s mission of preserving and sharing history.

A Weeklong Experience in the Center of Santa Cruz

The museum setting adds a unique dimension to the experience. Instead of creating art in isolation, campers will be constantly reminded that they are part of a larger continuum of artists and storytellers. Seeing their work develop within a museum will reinforce the idea that young voices and fresh perspectives belong in cultural spaces.

As the week comes to a close, campers will step back to admire the mural they had created together. What emerges will be more than a finished artwork—a testament to collaboration, creativity, and confidence. Parents, museum visitors, and staff alike will be drawn to the energy and authenticity of the piece, eager to hear the stories behind it.

This summer camp is more than an art class; it is an invitation to see the world differently. By combining the expertise of a muralist with the rich resources of the MAH, the program empowers young artists to think big, work together, and understand the impact their creativity can have. It will serve as a reminder that when art and history come together, something truly inspiring can happen.
