SUMMARY:Reskilling Expo
DESCRIPTION: Reskilling Expo at the MAH Educational Forum Revives Home Skills\, Encourages Traditional Living PracticesAdmission is $5 to $25\, based on a sliding scale. ReskillingSchedule The Reskilling Expo regularly offers low-cost sustainable living-skills education to Santa Cruz County residents in order to strengthen local resilience. Each workshop is designed to teach hands-on skills that participants can easily implement. Effective garden practices\, home maintenance skills\, traditional crafts and efficient water use are all on the roster for May 20. The one-hour-and-twenty-minute sessions allow for in-depth learning. Find the complete class schedule at http://reskillingexpo.org. "The Reskilling Expo is a knowledge commons where information\, skills and talents are freely shared. Our aim is to respond to local needs\," says Reskilling Expo Director Bonnie Linden. "For example\, water use is currently a charged and divisive local issue. So we've asked permaculture designer and water conservation instructor LeAnne Ravinale to present sessions on Water Catchment and Greywater."We're pleased that both Michael and Lesley Tierra will be teaching on May 20. Michael will teach Growing and Using Medicinal Herbs and Lesley\, Cooking with Medicinal Herbs. Highly regarded in their field\, the Tierras have all the attributes of perfect Reskilling Teachers: talent\, generosity and vision."We're also delighted that Deepa Natarajan returns once again to teach Natural Plant Dyes for Textiles. Deepa comes to us from Permacouture Institute in San Francisco\, which works with hands-on\, grass roots projects to promote sustainability re textiles."Natarajan runs the Permacouture Institute's Seeds to Sew program which partners with Seed Libraries to raise awareness of dye-producing plants. She has travelled many times to South India to learn traditional practices of food\, farming\, performing arts and textiles."The Reskilling Expo engages hidden talents and reclaims lost abilities\,” says Nina Simon\, Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. "This syncs perfectly with the goals of the MAH to help people connect with the cultural heritage of our community. We're excited by the steady growth of the Expo\, its projects and its mission to preserve and present historical skills like Drop Spindling and Peg Looming that might otherwise be lost."As well as the forums at the MAH\, the Reskilling Expo has recently established two resilience-building outreach projects: the Santa Cruz Grows Seed Library and TimeBank Santa Cruz. "Seed saving is a time-honored tradition that nurtures locally adapted plant varieties and strengthens biodiversity\," says Linden. Workshops on Seed Starting and Plant Propagation are offered at each Expo. TimeBanking is a system of reciprocal exchange that builds local resilience as members trade services hour-for-hour. There will be a TimeBank Orientation Presentation and a Mixer for members and prospective members at the May 20 Expo. The Reskilling Expo is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit fiscally sponsored by the William James Association. SUMMARY:What is Erotic? at the MAH
DESCRIPTION:What is Erotic? at the MAH. That's right\, the hottest date for Valentine's Day is here again in July presented by the MAH. Come get a smaller dose of What is Erotic? as we say goodbye to the Love Fest exhibit at the MAH. As humans we are all sexual beings. Sex is both a compelling and volatile subject and is often used to abuse\, manipulate\, control\, and shame. Our vision is to be the solution to bringing our relationship with sexuality back into integrity. In the past 7 years “What is Erotic?” has invited artists to answer this one provocative question… Although this is a titillating performance arts show\, it’s also a safe space for exploration\, education\, and self expression of sexuality and relationship through combining personal development and the creative arts. 18 and over only. The 418 Project (www.the418.org) has been the home of What is Erotic? for the past 7 years. We proudly thank them as our biggest fans and sponsors.

SUMMARY:Pop-Up Museum at the MAH
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_3858" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Pop Up Museum"][/caption] Join us at MAH’s Pop-Up Museum this Saturday\, March 24th from 3-5PM. Created by University of Washington graduate student Michelle DelCarlo\, the pop-up museum is a participatory community event where you share a personal object\, based on a theme\, to spark conversation with others. The theme of this pop-up is Something or Someone You Love. Do you have a meaningful photo or object of someone very special? Perhaps you love the outdoors and have a well-loved pair of hiking shoes. Or maybe you are in love with a place in the world and have a memento from a trip there. Feel free to interpret the theme as you will. Once you arrive at the pop-up up\, you will write a brief label for your object describing why it is meaningful to you. Be prepared to share stories\, learn about others\, and have fun. At the end of the pop-up\, you will take your object home so you can continue to cherish it. See you there!

SUMMARY:Inside Look: Ancestor Bags Talk in partnership with the Santa Cruz Handweaver’s Guild
DESCRIPTION:Inside Look: Ancestor Bags Talk in partnership with the Santa Cruz Handweaver’s Guild Australian-born sculptor weaver Sue Hiley Harris will talk about the ideas and inspiration behind her recent project\, Ancestor Bags\, an installation of thirty suspended abstract works\, each representing one of her direct British and Australian ancestors over four generations. Sue lives in Britain and was inspired after seeing an Aboriginal string bag in Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum with an old label indicating that it had been used 'for carrying the bones of dead relatives.' It was similar to one sent to her by her mother. The details of the weaving\, dyeing and construction of each work - as well as the materials used - convey coded information about members of her family. Shown together\, the hangings are a unique visual exploration of ancestry.

In sync with MAH’s current exhibition “All You Need is Love\,” Love Fest will offer romantic adventures for all ages: Twist with visitors in our stage-sized twister game\, meet friends and soul mates in daring dating games\, dance to local live music by Leah Ray Mendez and The Rasinettes\, jump into pictures frames to create your own family or love portraits\, learn the art of tango dancing and cozy up in our photo love booth. And if you’ve ever had your heart bruised or broken\, now is your time to fight back with our love revenge room\, where you will find a piñata to whack\, bundles of balloons to pop\, and swells of sugary sweet valentines for you to cut up\, rip\, or just punch. [caption id="attachment_4001" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Santa Cruz Writes Love Letters Project"][/caption] For those still feeling feisty\, Shakespeare Santa Cruz will turn Abbot square into a theatrical playground where they will teach visitors how to fight for their hearts with medieval skills and weaponry\, while also presenting the wit of Shakespearean love-battle skits. But it’s not all breaks and aches— The Pajaro Valley Quilting Association will reinvent card making by sewing postcards out of fabric and the invincible Santa Cruz Derby Girls will tie the knot in a strong and probing marriage. Visitors are invited to turn love to craft with creative ways to say "I love you" through hands on art projects\, making seed love bombs or recording audio love notes emailed directly to your loved ones by Drew Waters and Stephen Walker. Santa Cruz Writes will type you a love letter to add to our community's Love Letters Love Map in the history gallery. Test your local history knowledge in our Santa Cruz love couples game or make your own history with your message in a bottle. Nothing says love like flowers do\, arrange your own bouquet with Blue Heron Farms. Seven years ago\, Good Times Editor and GTv Host\, Greg Archer\, set out on the mother of all experiments: Would it would feel to date himself? It went so well—all those love notes helped!— that six weeks later\, he asked himself another question: What would if feel like to get married—to himself? Now\, after all the ups\, downs\, and mood swings in between\, Mr. Archer is renewing his wedding vows. Watch the performance art event of the season as Greg and Greg recommit to love\, honor and respect each other—till death do they part. Greg will be conducting self marriage ceremonies with marriage certificates for any self-loving visitors willing to commit. SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: "Forage Species" with Edward Martinez
DESCRIPTION: This piece will be on display from Sunday November 13 - early December “Forage Species” Edward Martinez Materials: Scrap metal fence\, scavenged sheet metal and elbow grease “and the meek shall inherit the earth”. ‘Often quoted and seldom taken seriously’. “Forage species” are those critters upon which all larger species depend upon for food. Typically these larger species are the ones we humans depend upon for food. We are learning to take great care of these stocks but are missing the message that the humble sardine\, anchovy\, jack smelt and others are trying to tell us. These species are changing their behavior and patters dramatically which should be seen as a sign that the system that delivers our salmon\, halibut and Sea Bass is under stress. “Forage species “ attempts to put into perspective visually\, our relationship to these tiny angels. It also begs the viewer to ask questions about changing climate\, toxic industry\, and human disruption of viable ecosystem. Especially when they see Bees disappearing in mass numbers\, where they see radical changes to the numbers and migratory patterns of these crucial indicator species. If you are interested in "Forage Species" please contact the artist at elm3@got.net or call 419-5855 About Ed Martinez: Edward Martinez is an artist\, entrepreneur\, developer\, designer and marketing strategist with more than 36 years of environmentally innovative\, marketing and non-profit experience; In 2009\, one of Ed’s video productions for the California Grey Bears was a finalist for a national Community Television award. SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Gayle Pitts
DESCRIPTION:Saturday December 17\, 11am-5pm Gayle Pitts\, Sculptor (Gayle Force Creations) Gayle Pitts is a multi-media sculptor and ocean conservationist who lives and works in the Santa Cruz Tannery. Come to the MAH Atrium to watch this passionate and multi-faceted artist combine canvas and natural found materials to create sculptures that evoke the wild spirit and beauty of the California Coastline. About Gayle Pitts: [caption id="attachment_2528" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Gayle Pitts and her husband Art"][/caption] Gayle is a native Californian born in Santa Cruz. Her childhood and early adulthood were spent on the ocean first with her family who fished from the Channel Islands to Fort Bragg and then on commercial fishing boats that ranged as far north as Eureka\, California. Marine life is the primary subject of Gayle's work. Much of her free time as a child was spent rowing in a dinghy with her German Shepherd Kimo into the coves and inland waterways of the California coast studying the infinite variety of sea life that surrounded her. Gayle sculpts on canvas\, driftwood\, stone and seashells using a product called Paper Clay. Unlike red clay\, paper clay is not fired. When wet it is sculpted like any clay\, but when dry it can be carved\, sanded\, layered or re-softened if needed. It can be painted and sealed using acrylic paints. Protection and preservation of sea life and the ocean is a primary focus of Gayle's. The loss of the fish populations and its effect on the lives of the fisherman is of major concern. Gayle plans to donate a percentage of her profits to organizations that protect the marine environment. If you are interested in contacting Gayle to view her art she can be reached at 831-332-7813.

SUMMARY:Everything Which Is... Yes Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Come to the MAH for a free screening of Everything Which Is... Yes\, the 60-minute documentary that won the Audience Award for Locally-Produced Work at the 2011 Santa Cruz Film Festival. John Barret's moving film chronicles local documentarian David Hoffman's recovery from a devastating fire that destroyed his home\, his personal film archive and the treasured collections he had built over 45 years. Determined to "make something good out of something bad"\, Hoffman began to videotape himself as a record for his young sons of what the loss meant to him. He takes us on a tour of his burned property and the result is an inspiring glimpse into his life and times\, his distinct way of seeing the world and his remarkable career as a pioneer of documentary filmmaking\, featuring stunning clips from many of his unique and important films. Most importantly\, Hoffman's stated philosophy leaves us with an uplifting sense of perseverance and a strong testament to the notion that we all have the capacity to make something good out of something bad. The film will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and the subject of the film. View the trailer here. This screening is a precursor to a Tannery Arts Lecture Series event on Thursday\, November 17 at 7pm on the future of independent film in Santa Cruz.

Come to the MAH atrium this Saturday from 11am to 5pm to watch Tallie work on one of her amazing creations\, a Knight in Shining Armor Costume for Halloween\, and to get inspired! **Please note that Makers at the MAH is not a workshop. It is an artist in residency program designed to allow the public to view the creative process and to allow artists to interact with visitors. Please see description on Makers page for more details.** About Tallie Adair (née Crawford): Aloha All! [caption id="attachment_2214" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Tallie Adair"][/caption] I am a freelance designer\, self-employed but I like to work on various types of productions as a team member too. My inspiration comes from the places I've lived and the people I meet. As a designer I'm free to do art as I please: paintings into wearable silk designs\, fashion illustrations\, and from canvas portraits to canvas boat tops! Bags and accessories\, industrial\, home\, fashion and costume design. Check out my profile and Picasa web album to familiarize your self with my work. Please contact me if you are interested in any of my work! DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_492" align="alignright" width="240" caption="Jackie Baxton"][/caption] Mixed Media Sculptures and Mask Making; July 23. Jackie and Lael are students at the California College of the Arts whose work explores the connection between dreams\, nature\, and the mechanical world. About Jackie Baxton: "I create art as a therapeutic means of reflecting my life experiences\, spiritual mythologies\, and the natural world from which I draw visual inspiration. Working with a variety of media and techniques including gourds\, painting\, metal\, wet and hand felting\, found objects and clay\, I sculpt and build scenarios or worlds to encase visions inspired by nature. Currently a student at the California College of the Arts\, I now reside in Oakland with my pack. My experiences traveling offer major sources of content and inspiration to my artwork. This summer’s expedition around the Southwest has influenced many ideas and lent concepts to a body of work now in progress." [caption id="attachment_493" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Lael Seltzer"][/caption] About Lael Seltzer: "I create to express my opinions\, dreams\, and perspective on life as an individual human cast into a beautiful but treacherous universe. The dichotomy between the natural and mechanical worlds is a valley of concept I often explore. I use a range of media and practices to employ my visions and abstractions\, including woodblock-printing\, painting\, pen and ink\, use of found objects\, etching\, mask-making\, and sculpting. Finished pieces may vary from social commentaries\, to comic satire\, to representations of natural forms\, but I am constantly exploring new techniques\, and landscapes both physical and conceptual. I currently reside in Oakland with my companion and furry friends\, where I am a senior at the California College of the Arts."

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Scott Robinson French & Andrew Wyatt Driscoll
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_500" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Scott Robinson French"][/caption] Friday August 5 through Sunday August 7\, all day. Scott and Andrew are Santa Cruz sculptors\, woodworkers\, and ocean enthusiasts. They will be building a canoe in the Museum Atrium\, working entirely with hand tools. About Scott Robinson French: “I grew up in New England and have been intrigued with the ocean since I first saw it in Rhode Island. Since I could swim I have tried to find things that aid my body’s terrestrial tendencies. Skim boards turned into wave riding vehicles. In high school my friends and I would decorate lunch trays as an upgrade to the skim board. Shortly thereafter\, as my understanding of both the ocean and its utility grew\, I developed my own tool to ride waves. My spin on the “hand plane” looked to provide body surfers with options in relation to the type of wave they seemed to enjoy most. Models ranging in size and contour help to make the most of each wave and with that idea Diatom-Designs was created. While studying metal sculpture and surfing at UC Santa Cruz\, my interest in creating bigger and more elaborate ocean tools progressed\, along with my understanding of various materials. Being an Art Major in this age is an intricate balance between statement and structure. I wanted to take this balance into the world of boat building using natural materials within the envelope of aesthetic-utility. After building a modest workshop\, I took to the idea of cutting through the surface of the ocean as travel\, as well as my basis for ocean interaction; entertainment. The result was canoe building and with the help of my good friend and fellow water enthusiast\, Andrew Driscoll\, it became a two-man reality. We are constantly thinking about the needs of the ocean in relation to small craft as well as different ways to interact with it; an ocean fairing canoe? That’s right\, we have designed an asymmetrical canoe with the idea of cutting through moderate swell without loosing stability and the ability to track. Aesthetically… well we hope our creations speak for themselves.” About Andrew Wyatt Driscoll: Andrew Wyatt Driscoll was born and raised in San Diego California into what he refers to as a "sailing family". Both sides of Andrew's family have sailing roots going back generations\, and as such he grew up quite literally on the water. To add to that Andrew's family's business is the boat yard\, Drisoll Boat Works operating just a few blocks from the house in which he grew up. Consequently Andrew\, like all the children in his family\, has been sailing since a very young age. Rather than playing "ball sports" like most kids Andrew spent his youth racing small dingies up and down the California coast. In addition Andrew picked up surfing somewhere along the line\, and it wasn't long before it became a passion. Eventually Andrew began coaching sailing for the San Diego Yacht Club which he did for a number of years befor moving to Sant Cruz to study anthropology at U.C. Santa Cruz. While going to school in Santa Cruz Andrew again taught sailing\, this time in San Fransisco. Currently living in the Santa Cruz\, Andrew his been working as a caibnet maker for Gordon Millworks for the last three years. Having had the good fortune to grow up around the beautiful wooden boats built by his family Andrew has always had an appreciation for fine woodworking. Andrew is therefore very excited to be working on his own boat project with good friend Scott French. Scott and Andrew decided to partner up while living on the same property on the outskirts of Santa Cruz after realizing their similar ineterests and goals. SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Evelyn Markasky
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 13\, 11am-5pm Jewelry Design Evelyn is a local jewelry designer\, open studio participant and lead teacher for the Young Artist Studios (YAS). Come see how she crafts wearable treasures using metal\, enamel and fire. Evelyn Markasky About Evelyn Markasky: Evelyn started her life in an edgy little steel town with a large immigrant population in Youngstown\, Ohio. Life in Youngstown was shaped by steel and she is left with the image of the nighttime sky glowing pink from the blast furnaces 24 hours a day. It is this image she has subconsciously recreated in her studio with her torch; heating\, soldering\, coloring\, and melting metal\, not quite 24 hours a day\, but close! She spent many of her college years in photo booths\, creating images to use for her BFA in sculpture where she incorporated sculpture\, jewelry\, conceptual art\, and comedy\, not necessarily in that order. Her photo booth images became a ritual\, and an obsession. They have been painted on silk\, silk-screened\, enameled\, painted\, traced\, computerized\, shrinky-dinked\, made into a book\, sewn\, colored\, plastered\, etched\, and cut out of metal. Evelyn works mostly in copper using vitreous enamels sometimes for their colors\, but mostly as a patina adding texture and an aged effect to her pieces. She likes to take a hard cold piece of metal and turn it into something soft\, warm\, and organic. She continues her love of fire by torch-firing her enamel pieces. Her work is influenced by the idea that refined jewelry doesn’t fit every women. Her jewelry is clunky\, organic\, fat welded seams\, sensitive\, and moody. Working (wo)man’s jewelry meant to be worn everyday. Evelyn has taught and worked with people of all ages and abilities\, and has participated & exhibited in many art shows\, group exhibits & fairs including Santa Cruz Open Studios\, Heidi Lowe Gallery (DE)\, Peter Konstantine Gallery (Palm Springs)\, Hearts for the Arts\, group shows at the Santa Cruz Art League\, Infinity Art Gallery\, and the Pajaro Valley Art Council. She was involved with a Flickr group called Ring A Day (RAD) where she made a ring a day for a year. The group exhibited at the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) conference in Seattle in 2011 and Lark Books is creating a book about RAD that will be out in September 2011. She has been the lead teacher for the last 4 years for Young Artist Studios (YAS) where she works with a diverse and highly enjoyable group of disabled and able-bodied teenagers with varied art media. She also teaches beginning enamel and metal working classes. Contact: Eamarkasky55@gmail.com Website: www.Evelynmarkasky.com Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/markasky/

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Anastasia Torres-Gil and Gretchen Regenhardt
DESCRIPTION:Saturday August 20\, 11am-5pm Dog Couture Creation Anastasia takes discarded designer fabrics and turns them into couture garments for small dogs\, embellished with feathers\, rhinestones\, ribbons and flowers. Come see how Anastasia\, and her dog-muse Coco\, create over-the-top fashions. Glass Bead Making Gretchen will be demonstrating how to create glass beads. Watch as works on her current project\, making beads in the shapes of chili peppers and skeletons for use in jewelry making. About Anastasia Torres-Gil: [caption id="attachment_1621" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Anastasia Torres-Gil"][/caption] Anastasia is a fourth generation artist\, who spent much of her childhood drawing. She began her professional art career illustrating her college newspaper and text books for a local community college district. Somehow\, artistic endeavors were pushed aside and Anastasia became an attorney\, prosecuting hate crimes and general felonies at various District Attorney's Offices\, and representing clients at California Rural Legal Assistance. After nearly twenty-five years of lawyering\, Anastasia reevaluated her priorities and decided to spend more time doing what she had always loved -- creating art and being unconventional. Anastasia now spends her free time scouring thrift stores from Carmel to San Francisco for discarded Louis Vuitton purses and designer fashions (including Vera Wang\, Burberry\, Armani and Prada)\, which she redesigns and sews into couture for dogs and sells on her on-line dog clothing boutique\, www.myfavoritecouture.com. The fashion-forward dog couture models featured on the www.myfavoritecouture.com website are totally adorable and very adoptable dogs from the Santa Cruz SPCA. Anastasia's couture was recently featured on the Sábado Gigante television variety show\, and has garnered international attention. An acrylics pet portraiture artist as well\, Anastasia's paintings of dogs and pigs have been exhibited throughout the Bay Area and in New York City. About Gretchen Regenhardt: [caption id="attachment_1626" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Gretchen Regenhardt"][/caption] Gretchen began doing art at an early age\, painting and making mosaics of seeds and spices with a childhood friend. An art contest in 6th grade won her art lessons at the La Jolla Museum of Modern Art where she learned much more about color and form. Abandoning artistic pursuits for a time\, Gretchen became a lawyer providing free legal services for low-income people at a variety of locations throughout the country\, most recently at California Rural Legal Assistance\, Inc. Gretchen continued artistic endeavors on the side\, primarily watercolor painting\, sculpture\, jewelry making and mosaics. She has shown her work at the Santa Cruz County fair where she won an award for a sculpture made from household items her dog destroyed as a puppy. Gretchen’s current project is making glass beads in the shapes of chili peppers and skeletons for use in jewelry making.

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Joe Cantrell
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_1234" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Joe Cantrell"][/caption] Saturday August 27\, 11am-5pm Audio Installation Joe Cantrell is a musician and multi-media artist specializing in sound art\, installations and performance. Joe will be working on an audio installation that uses am radio signal information and an array of 5 small speakers. The source of the audio signal will be generated from the artists brain patterns generated as he experiments with different signal/speaker configurations and interacts with the audience. About Joe Cantrell: Joe Cantrell is a musician and multi-media artist specializing in sound art\, installations and performances inspired by the nexus of technology\, fixity and entropy. He takes inspiration from the incessant acceleration of technology and media\, the ownership of same\, and our interactions with the waste these processes produce. As a performer\, he incorporates numerous musical disciplines and utilizes diverse instrumentation and techniques\, including re-purposed devices\, tape destruction\, feedback\, process pieces and computer generated sounds\, as well as more traditional instrumentation. Currently he focused on performance systems based on controlled biofeedback loops and projects reflecting the life span and ownership of data. Joe has performed at various venues including the 2005 CEAIT festival at the REDCAT theater in Disney Hall. In 2006\, he had the distinct honor of receiving a multi-year grant from the Creative Capital Foundation for CALLSPACE\, a collaborative sound installation that highlighted inaccessible spaces.

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Andrew Purchin with Lisa Hochstein: Reflections on Undoing
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_933" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Andrew Purchin"][/caption] Saturday September 3\, 11am-5pm Andrew Purchin with Lisa Hochstein: Reflections on Undoing From viewing the art of Lisa Hochstein to a movement improvisation and to the making of movement paintings by Andrew Purchin -Lisa Hochstein will be ripping large pieces of paper creating a meditation and soundscape through out the 6 hour day. -Museum goers will be both the moving models and muse for Andrew Purchin as he creates paintings inspired by the sensitivity and creativity of museum patrons as they engage in the following movement improvisation: -Museum goers are invited to move up and down the stairs and through the atrium in slow motion with 10 -20 second pauses-- in random groupings\, without ever blocking the stairs over the course of the day. -Participants are encouraged to experiment with both pedestrian movement and more expressive movement. -How can these art viewers move like movement of Lisa Hochstein tearing paper in her collages of torn paper? -How can viewers group themselves in patterns that characterizes Hochstein’s work? About Andrew Purcin: In 1982\, Andrew Purchin developed an individual major at UC Santa Cruz entitled\, The Arts and Social Action. Through this major\, Purchin created art exhibits and experiences in which participants were encouraged to interact with the art. In the last fifteen years\, Purchin has been painting on site\, be it landscapes or at events such as weddings or at historical moments. Purchin puts himself in the middle of things\, capturing the movement and the mood. Purchin has created on site paintings at the Inauguration and the “We Are One” concert in Washington DC. In 2010\, Purchin founded the Artists Everywhere Project in which he creates installations of artists creating work in public with the aim of shifting the paradigm so that the making of art will be as popular as the playing of sports. Purchin’s work has been published in American Artist and in the Cultural Council Calendar. Purchin was awarded a partial fellowship to Vermont Studio Center where he was artist in residence in 2005. His work has been exhibited and honored in many venues including Lana Santorelli Gallery in NYC\, the Pearl Canyon Gallery in Carmel\, the Triton Museum in Santa Clara\, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History(MAH)\, the Santa Cruz Art League\, the Santa Cruz County Government Center\, the Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary Arts. Purchin is a Santa Cruz County Open Studios participant. Artist Statement: The ideal condition for my creative process is when all of us are deeply present and thus are aware of the sensations we feel inside and attuned to one another and all the qualities in our environment. By asking viewers to move to visual art\, I hope to create a field which is both kinetic and immediate so that I may go even further into my creative process. Lisa Hochstein’s collages in the exhibit “Undoings” bring me into a textural and visual field which leads me to endless discovery. I’ve invited Lisa to participate publicly in finding the movement in her creative process as a way to support my painting practice and to bring all of our attention to the beauty of the making. I invite viewers to immerse themselves in movement\, which is my primary subject matter. One option is for museum goers to find their own movement through being in touch with their bodies as they view Lisa’s collages. Another option is to observe and imagine being me painting the movement. Yet another option is to imagine being both me painting the movement and being the movement at the same time. My work spawns from my duel practices of being in the moment as I paint directly from life and from my practice of deep dance improvisation. In the deep dance practice\, I work to stay present in a microscopic way\, sensing my bones\, joints\, muscles and cells and how sensation and movement connect. From that point I sense the other dancers’ presence. A soft peripheral receptive vision is important to be aware of the other dancers as we collaborate with our bodies. I use my body like a paintbrush carving the space. When I paint on location\, I dance directly with the world as it passes by. Today\, you the viewers are the world that passes by me. Andrew Purchin September\, 2011 [caption id="attachment_934" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Reflections on Undoing"][/caption] Website: www.andrewpurchin.com How to Move to Visual Art: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vziekba0GA0 About Lisa Hochstein: Lisa Hochstein has been painting and working in collage for over 20 years. Inspired by the spare lines and industrial materials of modern architecture\, her work reflects a love for both geometric abstraction and the painterly gesture. After receiving her BFA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst\, Hochstein spent several years in Barcelona\, Spain\, painting\, traveling\, and teaching English. After returning to the U.S. in 1991\, she lived mostly in the Boston area before moving to Santa Cruz in 2002. Hochstein has been an exhibiting artist in Santa Cruz County’s Open Studios since 2003 and has had work in numerous local and national shows. In 2011 she was awarded a partial fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center\, where she will be in residence for the month of November. Artist Statement Collaborating with Andrew Purchin on Reflections on Undoing has allowed me to translate elements of my smaller collage pieces (on view in the third floor lobby) into larger gestures of tearing and arrangement. Throughout the day I will be working with a 1\,000-foot roll of ordinary butcher paper\, with no specific plan or destination in mind other than to elaborate on the notion of “undoing.” I have chosen to work with unadorned brown paper as a way of focusing on the simple beauty of the material itself\, as well as on the physical action that will transform the original neatly packaged roll. The openness of the Museum atrium provides an area for expansive movement\, as well as a wonderful setting for the soundscape created through large and small tearing motions. Andrew Purchin’s onsite painting offers the opportunity for museum-goers to not only observe the artist at work\, but also to be an integral part of the his movement-based painting. As visitors ascend and descend the stairwell they are encouraged to move in a way that is expressive of their responses to the collage work on the third floor. Andrew will be working on multiple canvases\, capturing the movement and mood of the day. At the end of the day I will gather the torn paper and begin building a large collage piece. I invite you to listen\, reflect\, and move in response to the work on the third floor\, the sounds you hear\, and the spirit of the day’s performance. SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Andrew Meave-Alonso
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_1828" align="alignright" width="225" caption="Andrew Meave-Alonso"][/caption] Saturday September 17\, 11am-5pm Painting Andrew Meave-Alonso is a painter and music major who explores the relationship between color and sound during the process of creation. In his own words: "I love to create\, all my life its been an obsession. Lately I'm very interested in exploring new mediums\, and hopefully finding some manner of fitting them together. For this particular project I hope to take voice recordings of museum patrons\, and translate them into colored print. I do this with the desire of creating an experience that invokes a connection to deeper parts of our awareness." Come to the MAH to view and become a part of his creative process. About Andrew Meave-Alonso: Andrew is a medium blender\, currently studying music at Cabrillo College. He has always been attracted to the act of creation\, and after studying color and sound separately\, is now interested in finding ways of creating a symbiotic relationship between the two. He has participated in several benefit shows for such humanitarian non-profits as "Stop the Traffik"\, and "Falling Whistles.

SUMMARY:Free First Friday October
DESCRIPTION: Friday\, October 7 11am – 9pm. Free admission and extended hours. From 5-9pm\, enjoy a no-host bar and live music while enjoying art and mingling with friends. cost: free. Screening of Papillons de Nuit 7pm Papillons de Nuit—Butterflies of the Night—is a video of the night visitors photographed every evening on the artist’s lighted window. Attracted to the light\, the moth has entered mythology and inspired poetry as a symbol of devotion and sacrifice in many cultures. Paradoxically\, our common wisdom dismisses the moth as unpleasant\, and it is often extinguished with the glancing blow of the hand. Using macro photography and video\, with the simplicity of early films\, artist Diana Hobson presents the exquisite detail and beauty of the common moth—every one an individual in its intricacy and diversity.

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Another Door
DESCRIPTION:Friday September 30 – Sunday October 2\, 11am-5pm Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall: Another Door Another Door is a large-scale\, interactive sculpture made primarily out of used doors\, recycled bike wheels\, and walls. The work consists of a series of small\, modular rooms and spaces that the viewer is able to navigate and experience through the use of the doors. Each door is connected to another using a simple mechanical overhead pulley system\, so that when one door opens another door closes. Each door represents a choice\, and each room a decision. The rooms have been painted by a number of different local artists\, inspiring participants to explore and move through the structure to experience all the unique spaces. Truly a collaborative work\, Another Door is the first sculpture produced by the Desperados Art Collective and was made possible by the support of Santa Cruz City\, the Black Rock Arts Foundation\, and the community both locally and online. Though fabricated as and Honorarium piece for Burning Man 2011\, Another Door stands alone on or off the desert as a strong work rooted in concept and rendered with ingenuity and skill. About Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall: Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall Paul Hempstead and Calen Barca-Hall met years back as sculpture students at UC Santa Cruz. In school they often found themselves working together and collaborating\, so upon graduating it was only natural for these two to form the successful and productive ‘Desperados Art Cooperative’. Paul has lived in over eight countries since his childhood\, his diverse upbringing providing him with a strong multifaceted personality. Over the years he has a developed a great love for material as well as “the mechanical.” A passionate cyclist and a skilled metalworker\, Paul’s eye for detail is apparent in all of his work. Calen was raised in the redwood foothills of Santa Cruz\, growing up in a large family of boys\, he has developed a great ability to both lead and collaborate. His work is often described as “playfully provocative” and his sophisticated concepts fuse seamlessly with his use of lighthearted materials. Though the Desperados are “young” (this is the first major sculpture that they’ve produced) their work ethic and intellect is quite matured. In the 7 months that they worked on “Another Door” Desperados grew from four members to eleven. The collective has allowed the new members an in depth introduction to the process and “paperwork” behind large-scale interactive art as well as the physical skills needed to fabricate it. Paul and Calen both share an innate ability to successfully teach and share their skills with others. Outside of Desperados\, Paul works as a mechanic at the Bike Church\, helping others learn the mechanics of their bikes\, while Calen works in town teaching art to adults with developmental disabilities. For more information regarding their piece “Another Door” you can visit their website www.anotherdoorproject.blogspot.com.
