SUMMARY:Reskilling Expo
DESCRIPTION: Reskilling Expo at the MAH Educational Forum Revives Home Skills\, Encourages Traditional Living PracticesAdmission is $5 to $25\, based on a sliding scale. ReskillingSchedule The Reskilling Expo regularly offers low-cost sustainable living-skills education to Santa Cruz County residents in order to strengthen local resilience. Each workshop is designed to teach hands-on skills that participants can easily implement. Effective garden practices\, home maintenance skills\, traditional crafts and efficient water use are all on the roster for May 20. The one-hour-and-twenty-minute sessions allow for in-depth learning. Find the complete class schedule at http://reskillingexpo.org. "The Reskilling Expo is a knowledge commons where information\, skills and talents are freely shared. Our aim is to respond to local needs\," says Reskilling Expo Director Bonnie Linden. "For example\, water use is currently a charged and divisive local issue. So we've asked permaculture designer and water conservation instructor LeAnne Ravinale to present sessions on Water Catchment and Greywater."We're pleased that both Michael and Lesley Tierra will be teaching on May 20. Michael will teach Growing and Using Medicinal Herbs and Lesley\, Cooking with Medicinal Herbs. Highly regarded in their field\, the Tierras have all the attributes of perfect Reskilling Teachers: talent\, generosity and vision."We're also delighted that Deepa Natarajan returns once again to teach Natural Plant Dyes for Textiles. Deepa comes to us from Permacouture Institute in San Francisco\, which works with hands-on\, grass roots projects to promote sustainability re textiles."Natarajan runs the Permacouture Institute's Seeds to Sew program which partners with Seed Libraries to raise awareness of dye-producing plants. She has travelled many times to South India to learn traditional practices of food\, farming\, performing arts and textiles."The Reskilling Expo engages hidden talents and reclaims lost abilities\,” says Nina Simon\, Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. "This syncs perfectly with the goals of the MAH to help people connect with the cultural heritage of our community. We're excited by the steady growth of the Expo\, its projects and its mission to preserve and present historical skills like Drop Spindling and Peg Looming that might otherwise be lost."As well as the forums at the MAH\, the Reskilling Expo has recently established two resilience-building outreach projects: the Santa Cruz Grows Seed Library and TimeBank Santa Cruz. "Seed saving is a time-honored tradition that nurtures locally adapted plant varieties and strengthens biodiversity\," says Linden. Workshops on Seed Starting and Plant Propagation are offered at each Expo. TimeBanking is a system of reciprocal exchange that builds local resilience as members trade services hour-for-hour. There will be a TimeBank Orientation Presentation and a Mixer for members and prospective members at the May 20 Expo. The Reskilling Expo is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit fiscally sponsored by the William James Association. SUMMARY:Pop-Up Museum at the MAH
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_3858" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Pop Up Museum"][/caption] Join us at MAH’s Pop-Up Museum this Saturday\, March 24th from 3-5PM. Created by University of Washington graduate student Michelle DelCarlo\, the pop-up museum is a participatory community event where you share a personal object\, based on a theme\, to spark conversation with others. The theme of this pop-up is Something or Someone You Love. Do you have a meaningful photo or object of someone very special? Perhaps you love the outdoors and have a well-loved pair of hiking shoes. Or maybe you are in love with a place in the world and have a memento from a trip there. Feel free to interpret the theme as you will. Once you arrive at the pop-up up\, you will write a brief label for your object describing why it is meaningful to you. Be prepared to share stories\, learn about others\, and have fun. At the end of the pop-up\, you will take your object home so you can continue to cherish it. See you there!

SUMMARY:Inside Look: Ancestor Bags Talk in partnership with the Santa Cruz Handweaver’s Guild
DESCRIPTION:Inside Look: Ancestor Bags Talk in partnership with the Santa Cruz Handweaver’s Guild Australian-born sculptor weaver Sue Hiley Harris will talk about the ideas and inspiration behind her recent project\, Ancestor Bags\, an installation of thirty suspended abstract works\, each representing one of her direct British and Australian ancestors over four generations. Sue lives in Britain and was inspired after seeing an Aboriginal string bag in Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum with an old label indicating that it had been used 'for carrying the bones of dead relatives.' It was similar to one sent to her by her mother. The details of the weaving\, dyeing and construction of each work - as well as the materials used - convey coded information about members of her family. Shown together\, the hangings are a unique visual exploration of ancestry.

SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: "Forage Species" with Edward Martinez
DESCRIPTION: This piece will be on display from Sunday November 13 - early December “Forage Species” Edward Martinez Materials: Scrap metal fence\, scavenged sheet metal and elbow grease “and the meek shall inherit the earth”. ‘Often quoted and seldom taken seriously’. “Forage species” are those critters upon which all larger species depend upon for food. Typically these larger species are the ones we humans depend upon for food. We are learning to take great care of these stocks but are missing the message that the humble sardine\, anchovy\, jack smelt and others are trying to tell us. These species are changing their behavior and patters dramatically which should be seen as a sign that the system that delivers our salmon\, halibut and Sea Bass is under stress. “Forage species “ attempts to put into perspective visually\, our relationship to these tiny angels. It also begs the viewer to ask questions about changing climate\, toxic industry\, and human disruption of viable ecosystem. Especially when they see Bees disappearing in mass numbers\, where they see radical changes to the numbers and migratory patterns of these crucial indicator species. If you are interested in "Forage Species" please contact the artist at elm3@got.net or call 419-5855 About Ed Martinez: Edward Martinez is an artist\, entrepreneur\, developer\, designer and marketing strategist with more than 36 years of environmentally innovative\, marketing and non-profit experience; In 2009\, one of Ed’s video productions for the California Grey Bears was a finalist for a national Community Television award. SUMMARY:Makers at the MAH: Gayle Pitts
DESCRIPTION:Saturday December 17\, 11am-5pm Gayle Pitts\, Sculptor (Gayle Force Creations) Gayle Pitts is a multi-media sculptor and ocean conservationist who lives and works in the Santa Cruz Tannery. Come to the MAH Atrium to watch this passionate and multi-faceted artist combine canvas and natural found materials to create sculptures that evoke the wild spirit and beauty of the California Coastline. About Gayle Pitts: [caption id="attachment_2528" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Gayle Pitts and her husband Art"][/caption] Gayle is a native Californian born in Santa Cruz. Her childhood and early adulthood were spent on the ocean first with her family who fished from the Channel Islands to Fort Bragg and then on commercial fishing boats that ranged as far north as Eureka\, California. Marine life is the primary subject of Gayle's work. Much of her free time as a child was spent rowing in a dinghy with her German Shepherd Kimo into the coves and inland waterways of the California coast studying the infinite variety of sea life that surrounded her. Gayle sculpts on canvas\, driftwood\, stone and seashells using a product called Paper Clay. Unlike red clay\, paper clay is not fired. When wet it is sculpted like any clay\, but when dry it can be carved\, sanded\, layered or re-softened if needed. It can be painted and sealed using acrylic paints. Protection and preservation of sea life and the ocean is a primary focus of Gayle's. The loss of the fish populations and its effect on the lives of the fisherman is of major concern. Gayle plans to donate a percentage of her profits to organizations that protect the marine environment. If you are interested in contacting Gayle to view her art she can be reached at 831-332-7813.

SUMMARY:Free First Friday October
DESCRIPTION: Friday\, October 7 11am – 9pm. Free admission and extended hours. From 5-9pm\, enjoy a no-host bar and live music while enjoying art and mingling with friends. cost: free. Screening of Papillons de Nuit 7pm Papillons de Nuit—Butterflies of the Night—is a video of the night visitors photographed every evening on the artist’s lighted window. Attracted to the light\, the moth has entered mythology and inspired poetry as a symbol of devotion and sacrifice in many cultures. Paradoxically\, our common wisdom dismisses the moth as unpleasant\, and it is often extinguished with the glancing blow of the hand. Using macro photography and video\, with the simplicity of early films\, artist Diana Hobson presents the exquisite detail and beauty of the common moth—every one an individual in its intricacy and diversity.
