Joining a New Kind of Museum
Posted by Nina on July 4, 2012
More MAH folk are joining the MAH blogging crew… please welcome Brenda Johnson, Community Research Intern at the MAH, to the website.
Hi! My name is Brenda and I’m one of the new interns at the MAH. My background is in the performing arts and only in the last year did I become interested in museums. See, I often don’t feel welcome in museums. I’ve never had an art history class, I’m not a visual artist (my stick people are crooked) and I often feel that museums are cold and only for those “on the inside.” As part of my Master’s degree programs, I decided to expand my experiences and learn more about museums and how they can and are serving their communities. This is what brought me to the MAH.
The MAH has been a breath of fresh air. From the first day I entered the building, I felt like I belonged. Walking up the Sound Steps made me laugh. I still laugh every time I hear a new response as I walk up or down the stairs. I was happily surprised and found myself laughing again when I used the elevator for the first time and found two colorful chairs welcoming me to take a break while I took a ride. The galleries are warm and fun. I enjoy being able to sit and listen to people’s stories in the Lezin Gallery or taking a quiz and adding my own stories in the Solari Gallery.
I’ve always felt I’d enjoy museums more if I could actually have hands-on experiences in them and that’s just what the MAH does. I’m excited to be here and look forward to experiencing First Friday so I can see how others enjoy the museum. I hope to meet you there!
