All You Need is Love: March 31, 2012–July 29, 2012
Love is in the air at the MAH this spring. This museum-wide exhibition explores the many ways that love is manifest in our everyday lives. The artworks and historical objects reflect everything from passionate love stories to love gone wrong to the fierce love between mother and child. The exhibition includes extraordinary artworks by over thirty artists including Joan Brown, Younhee Paik, and Raymond Saunders, as well as historic love letters, wedding dresses, and objects of affection from the Museum of Art & History’s permanent collection.
On the first floor, visit the Love Lounge. Learn more about famed relationships in Santa Cruz County history and check out stories from local homeless couples, seniors in love, and people who have done crazy things for love. Sit back, sing along to an old love song, even write your own love letter if you like.
Take the stairs to the second floor hear voices from Santa Cruz sharing the things they love most. On the second floor, enjoy the main exhibition on romantic and platonic love in the Solari Gallery. Throw a DIY wedding in Elizabeth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle’s Love Chapel, explore love gone wrong–and right–through historic artifacts and contemporary artworks, and play games to determine your love style and share stories of family experiences.
On the third floor, commune with Joan Brown’s powerful, mystical paintings of people and cats in the Art Forum Gallery. Make a collage to hang on the wall in the creativity lounge to commemorate the places, ideas, animals, and objects that represent the things you love best.
